UBTECH Panda Humanoid Robot

A panda that does not sit still is a rare thing, and that is the whole idea. The UBTECH Panda Humanoid Robot takes the gentle, familiar face of a panda and puts it on a walking humanoid that can greet guests, perform and even write and draw, so a crowd remembers the visit.

The product is available through this page, by quotation.

Background

UBTECH and the Walker lineage

UBTECH ROBOTICS CORP LTD was established in March 2012 and is a leading humanoid robots and smart service robots company. The Panda Robot draws on that background. It was designed with inspiration from pandas and leverages the technology used in the construction of Walker, a humanoid service robot.

The panda has a famous origin story. UBTECH customized a panda robot named "Youyou" for the China Pavilion at the Dubai Expo. The robot sold on this page is the interactive humanoid panda that grew out of that project.

Positioning: a performer, not a factory worker

The Panda Robot is designed for exhibition guidance, dance performance, and handwriting and drawing. It is not a machine for lifting heavy goods or for factory lines. Its value is in presence: a friendly face, expressive movement and the ability to carry out a routine in front of an audience.

Two features support that role. The first is a bionic eye design with dual flexible curved screens, together with a built-in native emotion display system of 28+ types. The second is a body with 41 high-performance servo-driven joints, which gives it the flexibility to move in a lifelike way.

What makes the Panda different from a costumed mascot?

A person in a costume is warm and likeable, but tires and cannot write a greeting. The Panda Robot does the same routine again and again. It walks at up to 3km/h, and with U-SLAM Navigation and Autonomous Path Planning it can find its way along a route.

Its face does the talking. The dual curved eye screens and the 28+ emotion types let it look pleased, curious or surprised, which is what draws people in at an event.

What does the joint design allow it to do?

The degrees of freedom are spread across the whole body: 6 in each leg, 7 in each arm, 6 in each hand and 3 in the neck. Servo joint torque runs from 4.5Nm to 200Nm, so small hand motions and larger leg motions are both covered. That fine hand control is what makes handwriting and drawing possible, and the arm load of 1.5kg in extended state is enough for a brush or a light prop.

Behind this sit two Intel i7 8665U processors at 1.9Ghz and the ROSA software framework. Dual-band Wi-Fi keeps the robot connected on site, and Smart Home Control is also listed.

Who is the UBTECH Panda Humanoid Robot for?

Exhibition organizers and pavilions will find the most obvious fit, since the robot began life as a pavilion guide. Cultural venues, museums and visitor centers can use it to greet guests and present a subject in an engaging way. Event and entertainment companies can add it to stage programs with dance performance.

Hotels, shopping centers and corporate lobbies may want a character that people photograph and talk about. If your need is practical reception work rather than character, look at the UBTECH Walker C Commercial Reception Humanoid Robot. For a wheeled service robot, see the UBTECH Cruzr 1S Intelligent Commercial Service Wheeled Humanoid Robot.

What is the UBTECH Panda Humanoid Robot used for?

  1. Exhibition guidance: it welcomes visitors and leads them through a hall or pavilion.
  2. Dance performance: its jointed body carries out choreographed routines on stage.
  3. Handwriting and drawing: it holds a brush and writes or draws in front of an audience.
  4. Emotional interaction: the eye screens show 28+ types of expression while it talks with guests.
  5. Autonomous movement: U-SLAM navigation and path planning move it around a venue.
  6. Brand and cultural showcase: the panda form makes a memorable ambassador at public events.
